About this course
Geometry and Measurement Grades 6 to 8 is a 12-week middle-school geometry course that uses only things a family already has: cardboard, paper and scissors, a ruler and tape measure, string, a protractor (or a printed one), graph paper, small cubes or sugar cubes, straws, a tin can and a flashlight. The crew turns a garage corner into the Blueprint Table and designs, draws and builds a cardboard model clubhouse, and every week's math makes one part of the build work. Students find the area of triangles and polygons by cutting and composing, draw polygons on a coordinate grid, unfold boxes into nets to find surface area, pack boxes with cubes for volume, draw the room to scale, build triangles from three measures, wrap string around a can to meet pi, write equations for unknown angles, slide, flip, turn and enlarge shapes on a grid, prove and use the Pythagorean theorem, and meet the irrational numbers that round things bring. Every answer is computed, every question is checked, and the course ends with a Build Day where the student shows the finished model to the family. Short daily lessons, a hands-on Build Lab each week and a Saturday Build Day. 100% free, start to finish.
Kids will
- Find the area of triangles, quadrilaterals and polygons by composing and decomposing them, on paper and on the coordinate plane
- Represent boxes and pyramids with nets to find surface area, and find the volume of prisms, including ones with fractional edges
- Use scale drawings to find real lengths and areas, build triangles from given measures, and describe the slices of solids
- Use the formulas for the circumference and area of a circle, and write and solve equations for unknown angles
- Describe slides, flips, turns and dilations with coordinates, and tell when two figures are congruent or similar
- Explain and apply the Pythagorean theorem, find the volume of cylinders, cones and spheres, and place irrational numbers on a number line
The 12 weeks
-
Week 1
Area by Cutting and Composing
Cut a shape apart, slide it together, count the squares
-
Week 2
Polygons on the Grid
Corners as coordinates, sides as differences
-
Week 3
Nets and Surface Area
Unfold a box, add up its faces
-
Week 4
Volume
How much the storage bin holds
-
Week 5
Scale Drawings
The whole garage on one page
-
Week 6
Triangles with Rules, and Slices
When three straws make a roof, and what a cut face shows
-
Week 7
Circles
String around a can, and a little more than three
-
Week 8
Angles
Pairs that add up, pairs that match
-
Week 9
Slides, Flips and Turns
Moving a shape without changing it
-
Week 10
Dilations and Similar Figures
The flashlight shadow: same shape, new size
-
Week 11
The Pythagorean Theorem
The brace: a² + b² = c² in every right triangle
-
Week 12
Round Solids, Irrational Numbers and Build Day
The can tank, the cone roof, the ball, and numbers that never end
